Marwan Barghouti still on top of the latest polls (18/8/2007)

In the latest poll conducted in the Palestinian territories by the Near East Center shows that Imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti still in the lead.

The poll shows that Marwan Barghouti got 42% to be the most capable Fatah leader. Mahoud Abbas the Palestinian Prisedent got 33% for the same question.

The same question was asked to the deferent factions and again Marwan Barghouti appears to be the most trusted among factions.

1.                  Most capable Fateh leader

 

When asked about the most suitable leader to lead Fateh, the results revealed that the majority of the Palestinian public (42%) views Marwan Barghouthi as the most suitable person to lead Fateh, followed by 33% who mentioned Mahmoud Abbas. As pointed out in figure 23, most other potential leaders ranked relatively low, in comparison.

2.                  Most capable Fateh leader according to faction and region

 

However, the situation changes rather substantively when the results are cross-reference according to factional trust.  While the majority of the public thought of Marwan Barghouthi as the most suitable person to lead Fateh, the majority of Fateh supporters, (53%) see Abbas as the most suitable leader while only 35% mentioned Marwan Barghouthi. As indicated in table 25, below, the high support for Marwan Barghouthi is partially attributed to the supporters of Hamas who were more likely to mention Barghouthi than Abbas.
