20/06/07 – Israeli Ministers and political
leaders call for the release of Barghouti.
The head of the Meretz movement, Yossi Beilin, called for the release of
Marwan Barghouti, saying: “In spite of the fact that Barghouti was
responsible for the 2nd Intifada, and his responsibility in that
Intifada was greater than anyone else, we are nonetheless talking about the
most important elected parliamentarian and the most pragmatic and
influential on the Palestinian street. His arrest was a big mistake and an
act of stupidity. Moreover, in addition to his imprisonment, not releasing
him would be an even larger mistake.”
Member of Knesset and Labor Party candidate for the Israeli presidency,
Colette Avital, also joined those who are calling for the release of Marwan
Barghouti. She said: “It is necessary to release him immediately. He is a
moderate person and he will empower the Palestinian moderate current.”
Eitan Cabel, Secretary General of the Ehud Barak-led Labor party, joined
Avital and Beilin asking for the release of Barghouti.
Arab member of the Knesset, Talab El-Sane’ said: “Releasing Marwan Barghouti
is more important now than a financial settlement with the Palestinian
Authority or transferring weapons to the PA, because Abu Mazen dearly needs
a strong personality with wide-spread popularity standing by him. Releasing
Barghouti would be added value to the supporting and empowering the
Palestinian president.”

support in the West Bank, the minister said, "if these people are in
prisons, they must be freed. I would have freed Barghouti a while ago. Abbas
needs able leaders in addition to [current Prime Minister]Salam Fayyad."
